Posted by: Pete Roussel on August 1, 2012 Starting this Sunday, Chris Vannini will join the CoachingSearch.com staff as a writer. Vannini is an accomplished writer who has covered Michigan State sports for the student newspaper, The Oakland Press and MLive.com. He writes a weekly MSU column for the Detroit Free Press on behalf of SB Nation. Vannini lives in Big Ten country, so his foot speed is far from SEC caliber, but his pulse on coaches is hard to match. ---------------- Carl Pelini began practice this morning before the sun came up in Boca Raton. Gene Chizik begins his fourth season at Auburn today. Temperature today at 4 pm in Auburn is expected to be 95 degrees, sunny, (feels like 101 degrees), 41% humidity. Randy Edsall spent Tuesday at the Baltimore Ravens training camp. ---------------- Nobody is really talking about it, but the NCAA sanction that I think will have the most negative effect on UCF is the reduction of two full-time football coaches permitted to recruit off-campus during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. This makes George O'Leary's job and UCF's transition into the Big East that much more challenging. ------------------- Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken has shown over the past year that he's not one to mince words. That's why I wasn't surprised to see his to-the-point comments to The Oklahoman about selecting freshman Wes Lunt as the Cowboys' starting quarterback. Monken said, "It was unanimous with our staff. Some 18-year-olds act like they're 13. Some 18-year-olds act like they're 23. He's so much more mature. He has a very accurate arm, he's got a calm demeanor like Brandon (Weeden) ... and he just gets it. He just has something about him, and I don't want to wait two years to figure it out." -------------------- According to the Fresno Bee, Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter has decided to close all but one practice to the public during August camp. DeRuyter will allow the public to watch the Bulldogs practice on August 11. Charlie Weis tweeted, "Practices are basically closed, but if you want to take a peak at how we are progressing, save Saturday am August 11th. Details out later." -------------------- At least 5-6 college coaches have spoken highly to me in recent weeks about quarterback training specialist David Morris, who operates QB Country. Keep an eye on @QBCountry. Several current college quarterbacks and a ton of high school quarterbacks in the southeast are developing their fundamentals with QB Country. -------------------- Steve Sarkisian has a difficult schedule this season including a trip to Death Valley on a Saturday night. Sark told ESPN, "You thrown in LSU --- If you're going to play 'em, you might as well play 'em when your fresh, while you're at your healthiest, and you feel the best about your team. And you still have some unknowns that they might not know about you with our new defensive coordinator and what not. It's the hand that we're dealt. They've embraced it." -------------------- I am telling you right now, you're going to see this play (see video) by multiple teams in college football this season. I've confirmed with two coordinators that already have it in their practice plans for the early part of August camp. It was the call-of-the-year in the NFL last season. ----------------------------------------------- Recent articles on CoachingSearch.com
