Danny Hope began his Big 10 Media Days' press conference with a statement full of both honesty and hopefulness.

"This is the first time since I became head coach at Purdue that we potentially have a very good football team coming back. We have a lot of experience, some maturity. We have a lot of team speed-a lot of good signs for this upcoming season," Hope told the media.

This year, due to Ohio State and Penn. State's individual postseason bans, only four teams from the Legend Division are eligible for the Big 10 Championship, but Hope doesn't see that as an advantage to rely on.

"Obviously, those that are eligible, it increases your odds some, but it still boils down to who wins the most and who plays the best. Rather than complicate it and assume it's an easier road, I think that we certainly have to grasp the idea that you have to win. We have to beat the teams that are eligible for the division championship and also the teams that aren't eligible in order to be the team that goes. So, I don't think it changes the big picture all that much."

Although excited about his team's odds, Hope was direct when asked for his thoughts about the recruitment of Penn. State players.

"As long as we're compliant, we're going to exercise every opportunity we can to enhance our own football team."

Regardless, Hope is focused on the players he has at hand, and his goals are clear:  He wants to take his middle-of-the-pack team to the top of the league.

This spring, Hope designed longer and harder practices because that's what the players need.

The Boilermakers opens the against Eastern Kentucky.  The next three games are at Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, and Marshall.
