A source has confirmed with CoachingSearch.com that South Florida head coach Willie Taggart will hire Alabama director of player personnel Paul Gonnella.
Gonnella served an integral part in helping Alabama achieve the #1 ranked recruiting class in the nation in 2012.
At South Florida, he will serve in the same capacity as Taggart will shift Stu Holt to an on-the-field position serving as the special teams coordinator.
Prior to joining the Alabama staff, Gonnella served as the director of player personnel at Purdue, Memphis, and Miami (FL) under Randy Shannon.
He has also served under Butch Davis at North Carolina and under Lane Kiffin at Tennessee.
Taggart's staff includes Chuck Bresnahan (defensive coordinator), Raymond Woodie (linebackers), Walt Wells (offensive coordinator / offensive line), Nick Sheridan (quarterbacks / passing game coordinator), Ron Cooper (defensive backs / assistant head coach), Eric Mathies (defensive line), David Reaves (wide receivers).
Earlier today, 247Sports.com reporter Josh Newberg broke the story that Marquel Blackwell will also join Taggart's staff. A source tells me that Blackwell is expected to serve in an off-the-field role with the title of director of high school relations.
South Florida will open spring practice on March 20.
The Bulls open the 2013 season against McNeese State. A week later, South Florida will travel to East Lansing to play Michigan State.
