Rich Rodriguez knows what the coaching carousel feels like from the inside, and it's not a lot of fun. Arizona's head coach doesn't even enjoy watching it this time of year.

"It's gut wrenching when you're in the middle of it, and it's a little bit gut wrenching just to watch it," Rodriguez said Tuesday on the Tim Brando Show on Yahoo! Sports Radio. "It's not just the head coach and his family that are going through it. It's all the assistant coaches and all the support staff. There are a whole lot of families that are going through a gut-wrenching time. That's just the way the business is nowadays.

"That hiring and firing season, that makes coaches nervous. This is nervous season for coaches."

Rodriguez also addressed this year's trend of most schools hiring head coaches rather than assistants and attributed it to the increased pressure to win quickly.

"More schools are thinking, 'We have to turn this thing around in two or three years. We can't wait the traditional four or five years so we have to get a guy who has a proven track record of doing that,'" he said.

That increased pressure comes along with the increased salaries, Rodriguez said.

"The business has become more business. When you get guys fired after two years and maybe one year, it's changed a little bit," he said. "As coaches, you have to understand that because of the way we are getting paid now, not just for head coaches but for coordinators. Coordinators are getting paid so much and they are getting fired if they don't produce right away as well."

Rodriguez praised his coaching staff with the Wildcats and said their relationship has a lot to do with Arizona's success this season.

"The chemistry on the staff is really good and I think our players see that," he said. "It's fun to come to work, it's fun to be around each other. I think everybody around our program sees that, good guys, great teachers but also fun to be around, and I think that's important. As tough as the business has become, you better enjoy working with each other on a day-to-day basis."
