Chip Kelly: 'I want a guy that can score a billion points a game'

Chip Kelly is all about the details.

The new Philadelphia Eagles head coach is in Mobile, Ala. For the Senior Bowl and spoke with reporters about building his staff. He's still looking for a defensive coordinator, and when he was asked about what is most important, Kelly explained it's more complicated than than one thing.

"We're all in a society where you want one word to describe everything, and I don't think I can describe a defensive coordinator in one word," he said. "There are so many different things you're looking at. How detail-oriented is he? What type of teacher is he? What is his philosophical stance on not only what you want to run defensively, what are your theories in the red zone?

"What are your theories on coming out? How do you feel about third down? How many guys do you want on the roster? What's your personnel-driven situation? You have a 53-man roster and every defensive coordinator wants 30 of them and every offensive coordinator wants 30 of them. I'm not great at math, but that's 60, and we're 10 over when we put the specialists in there. Are they willing to understand that, hey, we may have to have one less guy here because we have a better special teams guy on that side of the ball?

"So, there's a lot more into it than one word can describe. That's why the process takes a little time, because if you haven't worked with before and you don't know people that have worked with them that you trust, then it's more getting a feel for what they're all about.

"And that's a wide range of topics. ... I'll give you a new word: shutout ability. That would be the one overriding quality. I have no idea how you can define that, but that's actually a pretty good word right there. I'm going to tell everybody, if you have shutout ability, then I need to talk to you soon."

As for the offensive coordinator, the Eagles haven't confirmed reports that Pat Shurmur has been hired for that role, though it's merely a formality at this point. So when Kelly was asked if it would mean anything to bring in a coordinator with a different offensive background from him, Kelly explained he couldn't answer it in a way only he could.

"I'm not being a grump, but I'm not a hypothetical guy," he said. "Hypothetically, I want a guy that can score a billion points a game. When people ask you hypothetical questions, I'd like to score 25,000 points in a game, hypothetically. But I know you can't do that."

Kelly would later say that no coach is tied to any one scheme.
