Video: Mark Dantonio explains why stadium renovation is needed

Michigan State has broken ground on a north end zone renovation at Spartan Stadium, adding a new locker room, a media room, a recruiting room and more.
MSU has released a video about the project and about donating to the Spartan Fund — this project is being completely funded by the athletic department and donations.
Throughout the video, which includes renderings and highlights of big plays in the north end zone, Mark Dantonio explains why the renovation is necessary.
“It puts a front porch on our stadium,” he says. “It also provides that first-class atmosphere that is so vital to our players, our press and our recruits. Recruiting is the lifeblood of every program. It’s one of the things that is necessary to win. You need to be able to bring your players into an environment where they can talk to the recruits. You need to be able to have your coaches be able to talk to recruits and their families. Right now, our recruits and their families basically come into the locker room, see our coaches for a very short time, if they can, and then they leave. Their families really aren’t allowed to come in there.
“That’s where this recruiting room becomes so vital. It has an image to it, much like the Skandalaris Center and everything we’ve tried to do with the video boards. There’s an image that’s attached to this. The image portrays a championship-type venue. That’s what we’re trying to do. We’re not trying to do it one year at a time.
"We’re trying to promote and build a legacy here that will last for years to come. … The facility will be used year-round. Not just on game days. Year-round for recruiting venues, for meetings, for training table at some point.
“It will be used by all sports. I think there’s just tremendous upside for it. I really believe that’s something that’s needed and has been pointed to since I first came back. We just wanted to do it right. We wanted to do it at the right time. This is the right time to do it. There’s no question in my mind that now is the time. It has to be done and it has to move forward.”
MSU recently hired Curtis Blackwell as director of college advancement and performance camp director to help with recruiting, and the additions to Spartan Stadium should help even more.
