Wisconsin will wear a red helmet this season, a nod to the tradition of the program, as well as the present.
The Badgers used to wear red helmets, but Gary Andersen revealed a reverse version of the current helmet to the team at the end of the meeting, as shown in the latest episode of The Camp.
“We’re going to break out a new helmet this year, Andersen told the team. “It will be for game two (against Tennessee Tech), but it won’t just be for one game. I thought it was a good look. It’s basically your helmet flip-flopped. White-red to red-white. We’ll wear it game two, and we’ll wear it as many times as leadership committee deems to wear it throughout the year.
“It’s a little bit of a new tradition, but there is rich tradition here you all understand and you all know. We all have great respect for that. Molding that respectful tradition and trying to be on the cutting edge is what we’re trying to do. We’ll continue to move through that. This is a step in the right direction.”
I really like it. Wisconsin wore a red alternate helmet as part of an adidas design against Nebraska last year, and it looked good. The Badgers and Cornhuskers have very similar uniforms, and the red helmet is a way to stick out.
While most schools reveal any part of a new look with great fanfare, this was a subtle way for Wisconsin to do it.
