News, Notes & Quotes - July 25

Posted by: Chris Vannini on Tuesday July 25, 2017

We’re 32 days away from the first college football games of 2017, and 39 days from the first real college football Saturday.

- Big Ten and Mountain West coaches hold court at Media Days today.

In Chicago, the Big Ten coaches speaking will be P.J. Fleck, Pat Fitzgerald, James Franklin, Jeff Brohm, Mike Riley, Chris Ash and Jim Harbaugh. In Las Vegas, the MWC coaches will be Jeff Tedford, Nick Rolovich, Jay Norvell, Rocky Long, Brent Brennan and Tony Sanchez.

Keep track of key dates before the 2017 season here.

- Kirk Ferentz is not happy about ending two-a-days and starting camp earlier, and had different tweaks he would’ve suggested.

“I asked our training staff. Historically, that’s a bell curve for injuries in camp, so why not mandate two days off, back-to-back, right there before the curve gets to the top,” he said. “Fatigue brings that. There are some things we could have done to alleviate it.”

He added, “I see all the NFL stuff coming down to us in college. Preseason for us, we don’t play four preseason games. We’re talking five weeks of looking at each other. My stories aren’t that funny. I’m worried about the boredom and losing sense of purpose. We’re going to have to be creative in how we have camp and not be stale.”

- Urban Meyer made an interesting observation: Kevin Wilson is his first truly established offensive coordinator outside hire.

At Bowling Green, Gregg Brandon hadn’t been an OC before. At Utah, Mike Sanford had a little OC experience, including one year at Stanford. At Florida, Dan Mullen had been the QB coach at Utah, and Steve Addazio was promoted. At Ohio State, Tom Herman had been the OC at Texas State, Rice and Iowa State, and Ed Warinner was promoted.

“If you go through the history, either guys promoted on my staff or a young up-and-comer like a Tom Herman,” Meyer said. “But this is a veteran coach that's led some of the top offenses in America, very well respected in our profession. So he's had a lot of input in our offense. … So it's still going to be the Ohio State offense. However, we had some weaknesses a year ago, and I'd like to see some improvement. And I think Kevin will have a major impact.”

- Tom Allen gave his Indiana team three numbers when he became head coach.

"When I met with our players after I took over, I wrote these three numbers on the board — I did this with our staff as well — 50, 26, 10,” Allen said at Big Ten Media Days. “I asked them if they knew what those numbers represented, and they didn't.

“So I proceeded to tell them. It's been 50 years since we won the Big Ten; it's been 26 years since we won a bowl game; it's been 10 years since we had a winning season at Indiana. We're going to accomplish all three of those, I told our team. If you don't believe that, you need to leave. Said the same thing to our staff. I love them. I appreciate them. But I want a coaching staff, I want a football team that believes.”

- Paul Chryst says Jim Leonhard’s communication and ability to relate to players were a big part his promotion in just his second year as a coach.

“This will be the third defensive coordinator in three years, and one of the best qualities that Jimmy has is he understands football, but, more importantly, he understands players,” Chryst said at Big Ten Media Days.

“… They know Jimmy, they know how he communicates with him. It's one of his strengths. He's a tremendous connector, connector of people, and so it's been good.”

- Hawaii released a hype video for 2017. The Rainbow Warriors open in Week 0, at UMass on Aug. 26.
