My farewell letter, my next step and the future of CoachingSearch

Posted by: Chris Vannini on Monday July 31, 2017

At CoachingSearch, we get to the point quickly. After five years, my time with this place has come to an end.

I’ve accepted a job at The Athletic as a national college football writer, with an emphasis on coaching news and the Group of Five. The Athletic is a new subscription site that is growing rapidly, and former Fox News / Sports Illustrated writer Stewart Mandel is starting a college football vertical, called The All-American.

For now, CoachingSearch content and our timely and accurate transaction news on the ticker will be suspended as new writers are considered. If you are interested in becoming a part-time writer, email

Five years ago, I was hired by Pete Roussel to help with his new site, CoachingSearch. I could never have imagined how things would turn out. Starting from scratch, we built a smart, professional and respected place for people to get the most accurate information in coaching news.

I was initially hired part-time, my first solo writing job a year after graduating from Michigan State. I got the job just days before my wedding, and I’ve grown in so many ways since then. Quickly after I came aboard, viewership doubled, I was promoted to full-time, and we were off.

For coaches, athletic directors, fans and other readers, we built a trusted hub of information and insight. I’m incredibly proud of what we produced, and all the positive feedback from coaches and readers was encouraging every step of the way. In 2014, Pete moved to a new venture and handed me the keys to the site, and it’s been a 24/7/365 rush for me since then. I’ve met so many people trying to navigate the wild world of coaching, and related to it with my own profession.

In an always-changing media world, we had a niche, and we had a loyal readership. We didn’t spread unverified gossip. We kept it straight, short and to the point. We kept it unique. We didn’t flood you with ads. We enjoyed holding ground as the industry leader.

As for me, I will continue to report on coaching news, just in a different way. My contact info is here, and you can follow me on Twitter at @ChrisVannini. Coaches, if I don’t have your contact info, feel free to reach out. I look forward to continue telling stories about the coaching world.

CoachingSearch has stuck out in a world of noise and nonsense, and I thank you for following along for the ride.
