Must-watch: Ohio State assistant brings the juice in passionate speech to recruits

Ohio State just wrapped up an important recruiting weekend that included an intense speech by corners coach / special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs.

Coombs flat out brought the juice.

You’ll want to watch the speech below, but we’ve also transcribed his words for you:

“What makes us different? What makes us special?

“All I would tell you is the answer if right in front of your face.  Just look around you.  Look at the young men and the families that we have brought and invited to join our family here at Ohio State.  You’ve just spent a weekend with some of the best people in the country.  Not just the best players.  We understand that at Ohio State, we are going to recruit the 25 best players in America.  We will go to any corner of this country to find those men.  But we don’t just look for great players because there are a lot of great players.  We look for great families.  We look for men who have been raised in the right way because at the end of the day in this locker room, when you look at the locker on the right and the left, you want to know that that man has the same feeling, the same care, the same love and respect that you have for him.

“How is that formulated?  It’s not instantaneous, although over the course of this weekend and this recruiting process, some of you have become very, very close.  Some of you are teammates and have grown up together.  In this locker room with 105 men, we throw in guys from all parts of the country.  What makes us different?  What allows us to succeed at such a high level?  Coach Meyer told you in the team room, it’s evident every day.  It’s love, care, and respect for one another.  From coach to player, from coach to coach, more importantly from player to player. At the end of the day, you will be called upon on some Saturday in the fall, to perform at a level that is higher than you have ever done.  The reason that you will answer that call, the reason that you will fulfill that destiny, is because of the love, care, and respect that you have for that safety (points to a recruit) right next to you, for the defensive lineman that is rushing the passer.  When you go to kick off, you’re going to know the other 10 guys are passionate, not just about Ohio State, not just about the university, not just about winning but about you.  They care about one another.  That is not something that happens by accident.  It is intentional.  It is driven every day.  I have no hesitation and I know there is not a coach in our program about looking the men in his room, his unit right scare in the eye, and saying I love you because they do.  There is not a thing that a coach wouldn’t do for a player, and not a thing a player, I believe, that wouldn’t do for a coach.  But more than that, it’s what the players would do for one another.

We don’t win by accident at Ohio State. We win on purpose, and we win with a purpose. Because we have grown to be the kind of men that are passionate about each other. We refuse to lose, not just because it’s fun to win and hold trophies and wear rings. We refuse to lose because we don’t want to let our buddy down. It’s that foxhole mentality that has made our country great. When somebody attacks us, we go on the attack. When somebody attacks you, he is going to step up to the plate and be right there for you, because of the relationships that are developed in this room, in this weight room and on that practice field. That doesn’t come by accident. It comes through hard word. We don’t apologize for working hard at Ohio State. We will never apologize for asking you to do more, rather than less. You will expect that of your teammates.

You will expect your teammates to strain and stretch and fight for you, because that’s what you will do for them. You’ll walk into that weight room every day and you’ll pay a great price. We don’t apologize for that. You saw practice yesterday. At the end of that practice, wasn’t that exciting, how much fun our guys were having with one another? They work, they strain, they fight, they hit each other, they go and go, and then let’s take our pads off, run around, be buddies and have some fun. You guys got to see them in the dorms. You got to see them out socially. They truly do care about one another. That’s why we’re special. That’s why we’re different. There are great programs all over the country. There’s great football. There are great schools. There’s one Ohio State. The Ohio State University. You have been invited to join.

“We want to thank those of you who have stepped up and said, ‘I’m in.’ So many of you here this weekend, your parents, you should be proud. You have raised great men, and you have raised great men who made a great choice. We’re waiting on a couple of you. We don’t mind saying it. We don’t mind looking you right in the eye and saying, ‘Come on and join us.’ What are you waiting for? The family is here, and it is going to be special. Over the next four years, we’re going to change college football. We’re going to change college football. Not just because we’re going to win games, but because of the manner in which we’re going to do it. We’ll be able to link arms. We’ll be able to hug. We’ll be able to look our guys in the eye and say, ‘I love you’ and ‘I love you back.’ We’re going to be difference-makers, and that’s special. You get to be a part of it. You’ve got a front-row seat. Congratulations and thank you. This is going to be a phenomenal experience. I want you to watch today what the locker room experience looks like. I want you to get ready to go.”
