Matt Rhule completes Baylor coaching staff

Matt Rhule has finalized the positions for his Baylor staff for a second time.

After Matt Lubick left for Washington, Rhule hired Bob Bicknell recently to fill the spot. Rhule comes to Baylor after two straight 10-win seasons at Temple, including the AAC championship last fall.

Rhule takes over a Baylor program rocked by the sexual assault scandal. He inherited a team with one single recruit and put together a top-40 class. For the staff, he hired coaches from Temple, the NFL and high school.

Rhule brought the entire defensive staff from Temple, which includes defensive coordinator Phil Snow, defensive line coach Elijah Robinson, linebackers coach Mike Siravo and defensive backs coach Francis Brown.

The Owls had a top-20 scoring defense in each of the last two years. Doing that in the Big 12 will be a new challenge.

To run the offense, Rhule hired Matt Lubick and Jeff Nixon as co-offensive coordinators. Lubick spent the last four years at Oregon. He had joined Ole Miss to coach receivers, then joined Baylor a few weeks later, and then left again for Washington. Jeff Nixon spent last year under Chip Kelly with the 49ers, so it’ll be interesting to see how much of the Oregon offense is installed at Baylor. To fill Lubick's wide receivers spot, Rhule hired Bob Bicknell, also coming from the 49ers.

Rhule also brought veteran offensive line coach George DeLeone, who spent one year at Temple and will be 69 years old when the 2017 season starts. Glenn Thomas was the offensive coordinator at Temple and will coach quarterbacks.

To get better connected with the state, Rhule hired three Texas high school head coaches. Joey McGuire comes from Cedar Hill High School and will coach tight ends. Rhule also hired San Antonio Ronald Reagan High School head coach David Wetzel and Cedar Ridge High School head coach Shawn Bell to off-field roles. Both Wetzel and Bell are former Baylor players.

Rhule and the program continue to deal with the fallout from the scandal, and that’s not going away anytime soon. But come fall, the Rhule era will begin with home games against Liberty and UTSA, followed by a trip to Duke.

The potential addition of a 10th assistant could change things, but keep track of new FBS staffs here.
