Mark Richt: 'This is not a survival drill. This is a thrive drill'

Miami opens its second spring camp under Mark Richt on Tuesday, and that means winter workouts are finishing up.

The team released a video of Richt leading the Canes through the mat drills, something the coach loves. Any chance he gets, he explains how important it is.

This video included a deeper look at the drills themselves, plus Richt delivering a message to the team about what it means.

“This is not a survival drill. This is a thrive drill,” he says. “This is, when things get nasty, I get even tougher. You never quit, and you don’t let your teammate quit. That mat, when it gets wet and slippery, is adversity.

“What you learn is, when you do the drill right, you’ve got a better chance of success. … I’m tying to make this team great.”

The Hurricanes went 9-4 in Richt’s first season, including 5-3 in the ACC. There are no plans for a spring game, and they open the 2017 season at home against Bethune-Cookman, followed by trips to Arkansas State and Florida State.
