List: High school coaches hired to FBS college football jobs this offseason

Posted by: Chris Vannini on Friday March 10, 2017

Every year, a  group of high school coaches make the jump to college football, and the expansion of support staffs provides more opportunities.

This year, 23 high school coaches were hired in FBS ranks. Of those, 13 were hired to full-time coaching jobs. Last year, 15 became full-time coaches. Some have previous experience and move back up, while others have their first college job. This also comes as the NCAA weighs a new rule that would prevent Individuals Associated With A Prospect from joining a college staff within two years of that prospect's enrollment at that college, unless it's a full-time coaching job. That vote will come in April.

Here are the coaches who became full-time FBS coaches:

Donnie Abraham - IMG Academy (FL) defensive coordinator to Illinois safeties coach

A.J. Blum – Westfield (TX) head coach to Houston DL coach

Damon Cogdell – Carol City (FL) defensive coordinator to USF DE coach

Steve Crutchley - Eau Claire Memorial (WI) head coach to Northern Illinois WR coach

Aubrey Hill – Carol City (FL) head coach to Marshall WR coach to FIU WR coach

Michael Johnson – The King’s Academy (CA) head coach to Oregon WR coach

Joey McGuire – Cedar Hill (TX) head coach to Baylor TE coach

Eric Scott – Los Angeles (CA) head coach to Nevada outside WR coach

Jess Simpson – Buford (GA) head coach to Georgia State DL coach to Falcons defensive assistant

Josh Stepp – Lexington (SC) head coach to Georgia State RB / TE coach

Joe Tresey – Clear Fork (OH) athletic director to Kent State CB coach

Chuck Veliz – Former Montwood (TX) head coach to UTEP WR coach

David White – Army All-American Game player development to Nevada RB coach

There were also several high school coaches who moved to FBS in support roles:

Shawn Bell – Cedar Ridge (TX) head coach  to Baylor offensive analyst

Brian Blackmon – Opelika (AL) head coach) to Auburn offensive analyst

David Cooney - Southridge (FL) offensive coordinator to Miami (FL) quality control analyst.

Tim Tekyl – B.F. Terry (TX) head coach to Houston director of high school relations

David Wetzel– Reagan (TX) head coach to Baylor associate AD for high school relations

Jess Simpson moved to the NFL, but there was another high school coach who moved directly to the NFL

Jerod Kruse – Lee’s Summit West (MO) to Cleveland Browns assistant DB coach
