Chart: Super Bowl starters by college team and conference

Posted by: Chris Vannini on Saturday February 04, 2017

Two years ago, there were no former 5-star recruits among Super Bowl starters. This year, there are three: Julio Jones, Martellus Bennett and Malcolm Brown. (That’s among players’ whose rankings are available)

As noted by CBS Sports, 26 of the starters were not among the top 500 in their recruiting class. That includes 14 Patriots, unsurprisingly.

How do the starters break down by college conference and team?

Among total rosters, Alabama, Rutgers and Stanford lead the way with 5 players. The SEC leads, followed by the Pac-12 and Big Ten.

Among starters, the SEC once again leads the way with 11, which is down from 13 a year ago. LSU leads SEC teams with 3, all on the Falcons defense.

The Big Ten has 10, up from 8 last year and 5 the year before. Of those 10, 3 are from Rutgers. Among other conferences, the ACC has 8 (up from 5), and the American and Mountain West each have one after combining for 8 last year.

Here’s a full conference breakdown:

SEC: 11
Big Ten: 10
ACC: 8
Pac-12: 7
Big 12: 4
American: 1
Conference USA: 1
MAC: 1
Mountain West: 1
FCS: 2
Division II: 2
