Jeff Tedford has completed his full-time coaching staff at Fresno State.
With the addition of two Eastern Michigan assistants. Tedford has his nine full-time assistant coaches. Here is the 2017 Fresno State staff.
The staff includes several coaches who previously played or coached under Tedford.
The first additions Tedford made came from UNLV with running backs coach Jamie Christian and defensive backs coach J.D. Williams. Both are former Fresno State players, and Williams coached defensive backs for Tedford at Cal from 2002-05.
Tight ends coach Scott Thompson is another former Fresno State player who played tight end under Tedford, who was then the offensive coordinator. Thompson was in personnel and recruiting at USC from 2010-15 and helped with tight ends and special teams this season.
UC Davis defensive coordinator Bert Watts will coach Fresno’s linebackers. Watts played under Tedford at Cal and later served as a graduate assistant.
For his defensive coordinator, Tedford turned to Canada for Orlondo Steinauer, who spent four seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Tedford faced his defenses twice in 2015 when Tedford was the BC Lions head coach. The results were a 52-22 Hamilton win and a 40-13 BC win.
Tedford brought Kirby Moore with him from Washington as wide receivers coach. Moore is Kellen Moore’s brother and coached receivers at College of Idaho in 2014.
Tedford turned to Michigan for his defensive line coach in Tony Tuioti, who spent one year in Ann Arbor after two years as a quality control assistant with the Browns. He previously spent six years coaching at Hawaii, and Tuioti played a huge role in the Pacific islands part of Michigan’s satellite camp tour last summer, with deep relationships in the region. He'll undoubtedly recruit that area for Fresno.
The two final additions came from Eastern Michigan after the Bahamas Bowl. Offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer and offensive line coach Ryan Grubb helped lead EMU to its first bowl since 1987. The pair also coached together at the University of Sioux Falls (SD), where DeBoer led the program to three NAIA national titles in four years. Neither has much experience in California.
A head strength coach hasn't been named yet. Tedford’s first three games as head coach next year will be against Incarnate Word, at Alabama and at Washington.
