Charlie Strong completes South Florida coaching staff

Charlie Strong has completed his South Florida staff.

With the addition of Sean Cronin, Strong has his nine full-time assistants and head strength coach. He brought over a big part of his Texas staff and added some others with Florida ties.

Strong takes over a USF program coming off a 10-win season, so this isn’t a rebuilding job like he took over at Texas. Here’s the USF staff:

Strong’s Texas offense saw a big improvement in 2016, so he brought most of those coaches with him, including offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, wide receivers coach Charlie Williams and offensive line coach Matt Mattox. Gilbert and Mattox have been together at five different schools in five years (Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, Tulsa, Texas, USF).

Strong also brought quality control assistant Justin Burke to serve as tight ends coach.

Running backs coach Shaun King didn’t follow Willie Taggart to Oregon, but he was retained after coaching quarterbacks last year.

On defense, Brian Jean-Mary will serve as defensive coordinator after spending the past seven years with Strong, coaching linebackers at Louisville and Texas. Head strength coach Pat Moorer has also been with Strong and Jean-Mary for seven years.

Strong turned to the high school ranks in hiring defensive ends coach Damon Cogdell. He spent more than a decade as a high school coach in Florida, along with two years at West Virginia from 2014-15.

Defensive backs coach Blue Adams came to USF directly from West Virginia. Adams is from Miami and has also coached with the Dolphins, Northern Iowa and Purdue. Adams fills the spot opened by Corey Bell, who spent just a few weeks at USF before taking a job at Florida.

The last addition was Sean Cronin from Marshall to coach defensive tackles. Cronin was a graduate assistant under Strong at Florida. He spent the last four years at Marshall.

The potential addition of a 10th assistant could change things, but keep track of new FBS staffs here.
