Breaking down the open jobs in FBS college football

Posted by: Chris Vannini on Tuesday January 24, 2017

There are more than 50 assistant jobs open in FBS college football.

The coaching carousel is still spinning, with all 21 head coaching changes filled, including two in 2017. There have been some high-profile assistant moves, such as Matt Canada to LSU and Mike Elko to Notre Dame. There are also assistants who became head coaches, like Lane Kiffin, Geoff Collins and Luke Fickell.

You can see all open FBS assistant jobs here. Things will pick up quickly again after Signing Day next week.

The most common opening is running backs and defensive line, but many openings are unspecified or undisclosed for several reasons — including head coaching changes, coordinator changes or other moves leaving several options on the table. For example, Nebraska could use its open spot for a second defensive backs coach again or it could go in a different direction, or Arkansas could hire a defensive backs coach or something else if Paul Rhoads continues in that role after his promotion to coordinator.
